Digestion is basically when our body breaks down the food we eat into nutrients that can be absorbed and utilized. Many organs work together in the digestive process which is known as the digestive system and this system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.

So Why Is Our Digestion Important?

  1. Nutrition. The break down of food into nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are so crucial for energy, cell repair, and growth.

  2. Immune System Function. 70% of our immune system is housed in our gut which is why we need a healthy digestive system to protect our body against harmful bacteria, viruses and foreign pathogens.

  3. Detoxification. The liver which is part of the digestive system helps detoxify our body by breaking down toxins that are eliminated through our urine or stool.
